About

Hi, I’m Matt.

I spent twenty years in London running technology for one of the world’s best-known publishers. Now I live in Jersey, and Granite Digital is how I put all of that to work for businesses here.

The short version: I am a normal person who happens to know technology very well. I explain things in plain English, I turn up when I say I will, and I will tell you honestly when something is not worth your money.

Why Granite Digital

Big-company experience, without the big company.

You get me, not a rota

No account managers, no ticket queues, no junior sent in my place. The person you meet is the person who does the work.

Twenty years at serious scale

London newsrooms, multi-million-pound budgets, systems that could not be allowed to fail. Your problems will not scare me.

No commission behind the advice

I will happily sell you a website or an automation project, and I am upfront when I think you need one. What I never take is commission, reseller margin or referral fees, so when I recommend a tool or a supplier, it is because it is right for you.

Sound familiar?

Most of my work starts with one of these sentences.

“Our website looks fine, but nobody ever finds us through it.”
“I honestly don’t know what would happen if that computer died.”
“Everyone keeps saying we should be using AI. For what, exactly?”
“We pay for a lot of software and I couldn’t tell you what half of it does.”
“We’re too small for an IT director, but these decisions keep landing on me.”
“Somebody set this up years ago and now nobody can figure it out.”

If any of those sound like your Tuesday, that is exactly what Granite Digital is for.

That’s the job

Five ways I can help, all in plain English.

Websites that earn their keep

Design and build, plus the part most people skip: making sure customers actually find you. The groundwork that Google, and increasingly AI search, rewards is part of every build rather than an extra.

A plan for the day it stops

A business continuity plan you can actually follow on a bad morning: short, tested, and written for the person holding the phone, not for an auditor.

AI & automation, where it’s worth it

I sit with your team, map what they actually do, and automate the parts a computer should be doing. And I will tell you honestly when AI is not the answer.

A CTO, by the day

Senior technology judgement when you need it, on contracts, suppliers and the big decisions, without the salary of someone full-time.

how that works

The stuff nobody can figure out

The printer, the spreadsheet, the system the last person set up. If I can help, I will tell you. If I cannot, I usually know someone who can.

The experience

Most of my two decades were at The Economist, working from the helpdesk up to running the platforms the newsroom depended on every day. Contracts, suppliers, cloud, continuity: I’ve done all of it at a scale where mistakes were expensive. You get the benefit of those lessons without paying for them twice.

Working with me

No jargon, no lock-in, no drama. We’ll usually start with a cup of coffee and a look at what you’ve already got, because most businesses are closer to sorted than they think. Everything I set up is documented and yours, so you’re never dependent on me. And if something is a five-minute answer, it’s free.

The limits

What I am not.

Worth knowing now rather than three weeks in.

  • I am not a lawyer. Policies and terms get drafted as part of a build, and the final legal sign-off stays with you.
  • I do not do Cyber Essentials. Plenty of people search for it and I am not certified in it, so I do not sell it.
  • Microsoft 365 is advice rather than a specialism. Google Workspace and AWS are the ones I know to the floor.
  • I am not your IT provider. If you have a good one, keep them: they cover the laptops and the network, I cover whether the whole arrangement still works.
  • I do not give regulatory or compliance advice. I can do the technology behind it and hand your advisers the evidence.
  • I take no commission, resell nothing and accept no referral fees. It is the only reason a recommendation from me is worth anything.

Start with a conversation.

The first half hour is free, on a call or over a coffee. Bring whatever is bothering you and I will tell you honestly whether I can help and what it would cost. No obligation, no hard sell.
